4 Ways to Enjoy Winter More

4 Ways to Enjoy Winter More

We live in Canada and it is winter for solid 6+ months.. and we have a bit to go still this year. Therefore it is important to bare the layers and get out and do the things. Add in kids and there just isn’t an option to be sitting at home hiding from the cold. We all know the benefits to getting outside, fresh air, movement, legit gets the crazy out BUT theres a few things you need to really have success and ENJOY winter more.

1) Dress for success. Legit, you need to put away the chucks and level up with some real winter boots (a heavy duty pair and a ‘I would actually wear this out’ more casual pair, you’ll wear these more often and still be warm), Get wind pants, get snow pants, a hat and waterproof mitts for those snowman and snowball fight days. If you are warm you are more likely to be having fun. (the same goes for your kids! second hand stores are amazing for this stuff, or honestly most of my kid stuff goes from Walmart.)

2) Know your activities. When you go out side.. what cha gonna do? Will your family sled? Skate? snow shoe/hike? Ski? Build forts? Make snow art with food colouring and spray bottles? WHAT do you do? You need a plan and getting out and getting moving helps so much. Tiny humans also like a plan even if its walking around the block getting pulled by a sled.

3) Pack a snack or hot chocolate. my kids and myself LOVE bringing hot chocolate with a few marshmallows along for the ride. It helps make outdoor time last longer (play, hot chocolate break, play) It also allows us to sing songs, chat about our days or be silly. which this connection is important. My kids learn to love being outside because we do it together.

4) Get yourself a winter hobby. Now I know it is NOT easy to leave the house when humans are tiny BUT I will say that learning to ski, or skating with friends, cross country skiing or snow shoeing really will help you love the winter even more. I took up downhill skiing last year and it was humbling to learn something new but also so empowering. Yes I can do this alongside my kids as they are getting older but also it is something I can do alone or with friends and it’s really brought a ton of fun and excitement to my life outside of my house.

Ultimately, dress for the weather. Invest in the proper clothing and you will have WAY more fun. Ask yourself what do we want to do outside? What do we want to learn that is new? How can we bring some snacks or a fun treat to connect over? and holy Dina it’s time for a hobby? what should I do?

You got this. You can embrace the winter and have a TON of fun doing it!

Whats your fave outdoor activity? comment below.

Cheers to you!
